Spider veins are small purple and red blood vessels found on the thigh, lower legs or face. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin and increase in frequency with age. Some factors that predispose a person to spider veins are: obesity, heredity, pregnancy, occupations involving a lot of standing and use of birth control pills. The larger and more raised veins are called varicose veins and can often be painful and require surgical treatment by a vascular surgeon.
