Calluses and Corns
Home Calluses and Corns

Calluses and corns are thickened layers of skin caused by repeated pressure or friction which is a protective reaction. A corn develops on the top or side of a toe, usually from shoes that do not fit properly. A callus develops on the hands or soles of feet. Calluses and corns are rarely serious and should improve without causing long-term problems.

Treatment Options: Wearing properly fitting shoes, gently wear down the corn using a pumice stone, wear protective pads and gloves during activities that cause friction. Patients who are diabetic are prone to ulcers and should contact their health care provider if experiencing symptoms such as pain, redness, warmth or drainage.
