The skin is involved in more than 90% of people with lupus and skin symptoms are more common in caucasians than in African Americans. The classic rash is redness on the cheeks and bridge of nose called “butterfly or malar blush” which is brought on by sun exposure. Other skin problems such as hair loss or mouth sores may also be seen. Discoid Lupus affects only the skin and is consistent with scaliness and large red, circular rashes which sometimes scar. Sunlight often worsens the rash. A “bullous” lupus rash which is the development of large blisters is uncommon yet serious.

Treatment Options: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, topical and/or oral corticosteroids and Immunosuppressive drugs.
