Psoriasis is a common skin disorder found in an estimated 7.5 million Americans. Psoriasis produces thick red scaly plaques that are often covered with silvery scales. Most often affects the scalp, elbows, knees, back and buttocks but may involve any part of the body. The rash may itch. Psoriasis is not contagious however often runs in families. Certain factors may trigger an outbreak: severe sunburn, recent weight gain, overly vigorous shaving and eyebrow plucking, emotional stress, drinking alcohol, recent streptococcal infection or bout with the flu or certain medications.
Treatment Options: Moderate sunlight exposure, ultraviolet light, PUVA treatment, Xtrac laser, strong medications like Soriatane, Methotrexate or biologics which require close monitoring with blood tests.
